American Psychological Association
Founded in 1892, the American
Psychological Association (APA) is the largest scientific and
professional organization representing psychology in the United
States and is the world's largest association of psychologists.
APA's worldwide membership is nearly 160,000 researchers, practitioners,
educators, and consultants in business and industry.
For nearly half a century, psychologists have been at the forefront
of research on aggression, violence, child development, and the
relationship between psychological and social factors and behavior
change. The Association has undertaken a number of projects designed
to support research in the area of violence prevention and to bring
what is learned in this research to a broad audience. These projects
include books, monographs, and special editions of scholarly journals
and public information materials on such issues as family violence,
youth violence, violence against women, and violence in the workplace.
These programs and materials set the stage for the ACT initiative.
NAEYC
The National Association
for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), founded in 1926,
is the nation's largest organization of early childhood professionals
and others dedicated to improving the quality of early childhood
education programs for children from birth through age 8. The NAEYC
membership includes about 105,000 members and a national network
of more than 400 local, state, and affiliated regional early childhood
organizations. NAEYC members work with more than half a million
young children and their families every day. Over the past decade,
NAEYC's work in the area of violence has focused on its effects
on the lives of children and the ways that teachers and other adults
can prevent or reduce violence in the lives of children. Much of
this work has been published in NAEYC's peer-reviewed journal, Young
Children. Several other resources address television and
video gamesthe media in which violence is most likely to appear
as entertainment for children.
The Advertising Council
The Advertising
Council is dedicated to stimulating action on a select number
of significant public issues through public service advertising
communication programs. The Ad Council develops its advertising
campaigns by bringing together nonprofit organizations that have
significant public service messages with volunteer experts from
the communications, marketing, and advertising specialties. In recent
years, the Council has made a commitment to focus many of its programs
on the well-being of children and youth. The ACT program is a significant
part of this initiative.
